Speed and Feed Calculator for Milling SFM, RPM, IPM, IPR, …

Milling Calculator Instructions. General: This calculator is designed to coincide with standard feed and speed charts for various materials and carbide end mills. In the future we will be adding data for HSS and cobalt end mills. Therefore the diameters that are presented are the most common diameters in the range of 1/8" - 1" and 3mm - 25mm.

Suggested RPM for end mill

Using a 1.25 ball mill, I milled some troughs for the parts to lie in, then drilled and tapped 3/8-16 threaded holes on either side of the trough. I made a strap 3/4" thick to use as a clamp and counterbored the clamp for nylon pads, hoping that these pads would make up for any inconsistencies in the parts.

Mills. Is there a time HSS is better than carbide?

We were running 30 inches a minute @ 5000 rpm using a 2 flute HSS 1/4" mill with 3/8" shank. This worked beautifully, good finish, not much noise etc. I decided to swap in a solid carbide 1/4" 3 flute endmill and the results were terrible. A lot of noise and chatter and the finish was terrible. Figured maybe going to a 2 flute would fix it, but ...

Here's what G-Wizard would suggest for reamer speeds and feeds with a 3/16″ HSS Reamer in 300 series stainless, which was the question in the post: A 3/16″ reamer going 1″ deep in 304 stainless should run 458 rpm and 2.75 ipm feed. Chipload is 0.0015″. For comparison, here is the same cut with a 3/16″ HSS Twist Drill:

Fiberglass. A typical drill press often has an RPM limitation of between 2000-3600 RPM. If the chart above specifies a higher RPM than your machine is capable of, it should not cause a problem to run at a lower RPM. For instance, many people drill 1/16″ holes at less than 10,000 RPM with no problems.

Quick and easy... 500rpm for .500" in mild steel. This is a bit on the slow side (about 70fpm), but you won't burn up HSS endmills at that speed. Using this ratio, a 1/4" endmill would run at 1000rpm and a 1/8" at 2000, 1/16" at 4000. 3/32 is halfway between 1/16 and 1/8, so 3000rpm.
